The land Down Under is home to some amazing wildlife, but it’s also known for having some pretty great food. There are a few things that you could get at almost any restaurant in America and others that are just strange. You’ll have to try them yourself to see whether they’re up your alley or not!

Bird’s Nest Soup

Bird’s Nest Soup is a soup made from the nests of swiftlets. The nests are made from salivary secretions and are often found hanging from the roofs of caves.

Swiftlets are small birds that live in colonies and build their nests out of their saliva, they then use their saliva as glue to stick it together!

Kangaroo Steak

The kangaroo steak is a great source of protein, iron and zinc. It also has high levels of vitamin B12 and vitamin E. Kangaroo meat is very lean and low in fat, which makes it easier to digest than other meats.

The red kangaroo (Macropus rufus) is the largest native animal in Australia. It can grow up to 2 meters tall at its shoulder height and weigh more than 100 kilograms (220 pounds). A male kangaroo has large forearms used for fighting other males during mating season; these forearms are called boxing gloves because their shape resembles boxing gloves!

Emu

The emu is a flightless bird native to Australia. It’s often referred to as the “Australian ostrich,” but it actually has more in common with other large birds like ostriches and rheas. Emu meat is very lean and full of protein, making it an excellent addition to any diet. Emu can be used in many dishes such as kebabs, burgers or stir-fries–but don’t let its taste fool you! Unlike beef, emu doesn’t have that heavy feeling after eating it; instead it leaves behind a subtle taste similar to beef with less calories (about half).

Emus are also rich in minerals such as calcium and iron which are essential for strong bones as well as Vitamin B12 which helps maintain good health throughout adulthood

Tim Tams

We’ve all seen the commercials and heard about it from friends. Tim Tams are a chocolate biscuit that is popular in Australia and New Zealand. They’re made by Arnott’s Biscuits, which also makes another famous Australian food: Watties canned meats.

Tim Tams come in packs of four, each one containing two layers of dark chocolate and a creamy filling sandwiched between them. The biscuit itself is crispy on the outside but soft on the inside so when you bite into one it feels like you’re eating something similar to a Kit Kat bar with some extra crunch!

Ayam Goreng

Ayam Goreng is a type of Indonesian fried chicken. It’s made from chicken and spices, which are then deep-fried in hot oil.

The dish is often served with rice, vegetables and sambal (a spicy condiment). Ayam Goreng can be found on street corners throughout Indonesia and Malaysia as an inexpensive street food.

The Great Australian Meat Pie

The great Australian meat pie is a staple of Australian cuisine, and it’s one that you’ll find all over the country. A small baked pastry filled with meat and gravy, it’s a popular snack that can be found at sporting events or fairs. The filling varies depending on who makes it–it might be beef, lamb or chicken; kangaroo is also popular in some areas (though not always legal). The pastry itself may be shortcrust or puff pastry depending on your taste preferences and where you’re eating them–but there will always be something delicious inside those flaky layers!

Chiko Roll

The Chiko Roll is a deep fried breaded chicken fillet wrapped in bacon, served in a soft bread roll. The origin of this meal was in Melbourne, Australia. It’s popular in Australia and New Zealand. The chiko roll is similar to a chicken schnitzel but has more flavor due to its crispy outer coating of batter and bacon. Chikos are usually served with salad or chips on the side, along with sauce such as tomato sauce or BBQ sauce

Some of these items are pretty strange, but they are worth it for the experience.

You may have heard that Australia has a lot of unique food. For example, those crazy animals that are sometimes on the menu here are unlike anything you’ve ever seen in America. But don’t worry! You can still get familiar favorites like burgers and fries at many restaurants.

But if you’re feeling adventurous or just want to try something new while visiting Australia, here are some recommendations:

  • Kangaroo – This is one of my favorite meats because it tastes kind of like chicken but with a little bit more flavor and texture than regular chicken meat. Plus it’s fun to say “kangaroo” out loud (just make sure no one hears). I recommend ordering it medium rare at least once while visiting Australia so that it doesn’t taste too gamey for non-meat eaters like myself!
  • Crocodile – While this might sound gross at first glance (and even second glance), crocodile actually makes for some pretty good eating when prepared correctly–especially if cooked with lemon juice which helps cut through all those fishy flavors found within crocodile meat itself!
